What to Consider When Choosing Flooring for Schools

What to Consider When Choosing Flooring for Schools

Schools carry a lot of responsibility. For a large portion of the day, they oversee the education and overall wellbeing of a large number of children. At Winn Tile we have over 100 years of experience installing flooring for all sorts of commercial industries, including schools. So, we have put together a guide to help you choose the safest and most appealing floors for your schools and the children that attend them.

Classrooms

As the heart of the school, classroom floors need to be durable and aesthetically pleasing. One option for flooring in this area is carpet tiles. These are excellent because they are soft and durable. Especially for teachers that are on their feet most of the day, this type of flooring lends some cushion. Other advantages of carpet tiles include the fact that each square has its own base and backing, eliminating the need for underlay. You can install them directly to the subfloor. And if one area becomes especially worn or stained, you can simply replace that single tile instead of needing to do a full carpet replacement.

Another option is vinyl tiles. There are two types: vinyl composition tile and luxury vinyl tile. Vinyl composition tile is slightly cheaper than luxury tile, but it is almost not worth mentioning since it requires so much more maintenance than luxury vinyl tiles. As a very popular modern-day choice, luxury vinyl tiles have a photographic layer so you can feature any pattern you like on it. On top of this layer is a high durability wear layer. Making it a fantastic choice for high traffic areas. And because luxury vinyl is not porous like vinyl composition tiles, constant waxing applications are not necessary. Thus, maintenance for this flooring is a breeze.

Hallways

While classrooms bear the brunt of heavy desks and the scooting of chairs, hallways and corridors see a lot of heavy traffic. The flooring in these areas require durability, slip resistance, and should be easy to clean. Because of this, luxury vinyl tiles would be an excellent choice here as well for all of the reasons we outlined above.

Rubber flooring is also worth considering here. This type of floor is very commonly used in hospitals and it is not hard to see why. Not only is it tough, but if a fall were to occur, the rubber would be able to lessen the blow. In a school, accidents are bound to happen. Any added protection you can afford children as they travel to and from their classes is recommended. Besides being slip resistant and durable, rubber flooring is also easy to clean. This is ideal not only regarding regular care but also if a child gets sick in the hallway.

Of course, there are more options available to you than the ones listed here. If you would like to go over the pros and cons of other types of flooring, give us a call today! As was mentioned, here at Winn Tile we have a lot of experience installing flooring of all types for buildings of all types, and we would love to guide you to a selection that will best fit your needs and budget.
